Eco Friendly Backyard

What about Vegetables?
This vegetable plot was achieved by utilizing half of the chook run. You can see in the photo below that I have used the back corner of my block for my chook run. In this photo you can see I have built a pergola and planted a grape vine to provide a cool, shady refuge for the chooks during our hotter days.

I use the pergola legs during winter to fence off the area while the grape vine is dormant and letting the sun through to plant a winter crop. Here we have planted Broccoli, Carrots, Onions, Potato’s, Cauliflower, Cabbage and Pea’s. During the summer the hens have the use of this area.

They contribute to fertilizing the soil, and turn it over. Below. Notice the Passionfruit vine growing over the fence to the left to provide further shade.
Tip!  Vegetables need a northern aspect in a closeted situation like this to take maximum advantage of the winter sun.
Choose your crop wisely. You will notice Cabbage in my crop. It didn’t work because of the limited sun light.
The Cabbage put its effort into leaf growth chasing the sun.
